About time and a bit late! | Margarett and Tshepo, maternity session

I think I say every session that I had an absolute blast. Well, that's because I love what I do! This session however was particularly special to me. I gifted a maternity and newborn session to my good friends Margarett and Tshepo as their baby shower present. I actually snuck away before I had to do a dance and present the present! ;)

However! Before we started Tshepo was a little camera shy … He wouldn't even let me take photos as Margarett was getting ready. The transformation was pretty intense as he realised that it's actually ALOT of fun to goof around and have an afternoon dedicated to all about you.

It was my absolute pleasure, and I hope you love the photos you two.

Thank you for being you and thank you for being one of my dearest friends Tshepo.

All my love.
Liza.

P.S. Sorry for the lateness!

Protection, love, strength and balance

I really couldn't choose only a few to share from this session, I'm totally in love with all of them.

I highly encourage anyone who is booking a session with me to bring with you anything from your own culture, or anything which you hold dear. It definitely adds another element, and tells another piece of your story.

It's always nice to take photos for special people, and this young family is nothing but. Both proud and so much in love, it makes my job even more enjoyable (if that is at all possible!).

I hope you love these images as much as I do :)

Another favourite of mine. Can't beat squishy bums and daddy cuddles!

Ziva, 11 days | Newborn session

Newborn photography is an art. Period.

This is why I started Epiphany Studios. I wanted to photograph newborns. I even attended a newborn posing workshop at Jo Frances Photography, after I had an epiphany moment (hence the name …). Not to mention the endless hours I have admired Kelly Brown from Little Pieces Photography on Creativelive.com.

So, I must admit, my first two newborn shoots didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped. I learnt loads … but today, I had tears in my eyes when I finished editing these photos.

I've done it. I've finally found a passion where I am proud to stand behind my work! Where I like what I  have created.

Thank you baby Ziva for giving me hope that I can one day be a successful newborn photographer.

And thanks Peta, for being awesome. xx

"A Gift"

For those of you who have been following my journey which started officially back in February this year, you will know that I have been working on a project for my studies at Unitec. This was my second and final semester of the Photgraphic Practices short course.

The brief was to create at least 5 prints for our personal portfolio, which would be distinctive to ourselves in some way. For example; it asked us to draw on our personal history and experience and/or expertise, use a connection we have to someone or something, or to record something transient.

The brief also asked us to research a minimum of three photographers along the way. I decided to research Anne Geddes, Rebecca Swan and Fluer Wickes. Surprisingly, the most influential to my own work was Fluer. Surprising because at first, I found Fluer's work hard to soak in.

However, after forcing myself to take the time to dive into Fluer's photography and writing, I was enlightened by being introduced to a raw, personal and emotive style. Each of Fluer's pieces not only spoke to me but evoked such a strong emotion, I became hooked.

For those of you who have known me in the past, you will know that raw is not a word I could easily sit with. More 'perfectionist' really …

This is where I started to see that perfection is completely over-rated, and sometimes boring. I fell in love with Fluer's work because it inspired me to produce something so personal, and emotive, which I would never have attempted before.

Hence, "A gift" was born. :)

I am so happy with the outcome of this series. The journey it has taken me through has been huge. I have allowed emotions to wash right through me, and have marked these images with love and passion. I hope it shows how much I truly love my son and my partner. What a fabulous gift photography has been for me. What a precious gift this series will be for my son.
